ANCILLARY
Bore Viewer
This item was used to enable the Sergeant or
officer to look up the bore of a rifle without having to take it from the hands
of a soldier. The "notch" is where the mirror is set to 45 degrees to
the bore line. The handle is hinged to allow convenient holding. The cap to
protect mirror and tube is chain retained. This example is dated 1918.

The cap is removed and allowed to hang out of
the way on it's chain. The hinged arm or handle is folded out into a convenient
position for holding. The viewer is then inserted by the Sergeant or officer
into the chamber whilst the soldier holds the rifle at "port arms"
(across the chest at a 45 degree angle). The shoulder in the viewing tube is
the same size as a .303 rim so the viewer goes into the chamber until it stops
at the shoulder. The Sergeant or officer can then turn or twist the viewer in
the chamber so that he can see up the barrel.
